The designation 15W-40 is according to the SAE J300 classification. The number 15 before the letter W indicates how easily the oil flows when cold. The lower it is, the faster the oil reaches all parts of the engine during a cold start. The number 40 describes the viscosity at an operating temperature of about 100 °C. It is suitable for engines with higher mileage and for older designs where the manufacturer allows this class.
